  • Fun Facts: The boardgame Scrabble was invented in New York City. One of the earliest skyscrapers in the city was built in 1915: the Equitable Building. Residents at the time were concerned with a city full of skyscraper-created alleys and dark tunnels. As a result- a new zoning law required future skyscrapers to be "set back." This greatly impacted the design of future buildings in the city. Commercial toilet paper was first created and marketed by Joseph Gayetty in New York City (in 1857). A Bowery neighborhood building has served as a homeless shelter since 1879. America's first public brewery was established in 1633 by Peter Minuit in Market Field (modern day financial district) in Manhattan. On a clear day one can see parts of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania from the top of the Empire State Building. Central Park is larger than the principality of Monaco. New York City was the first capital city of America, 1789. The subway system in New York City runs 22 routes with 6,282 subway cars which stop at 468 different subway stations. Elisha Otis, an American inventor from New York created the first (in 1853) elevator safety devices and brake systems which made skyscrapers a practical reality. Grand Central Station contains a little alcove known as the whispering gallery. One person in the far corner can hear someone whisper in the opposite corner no matter how bustling the crowd. There was a pneumatic mail tube system used to connect 23 post offices across 27 miles of the city. This tube system moved up to 97,000 letters each day. It was disused in 1957. New York City's population is greater than that of 39 of the fifty states combined.
