  • Fun Facts: Yellowstone National Park was the first national park established in our country. In 1872 it was granted a national park title, this was years before Wyoming was granted a statehood. The park is called Yellowstone after the river by the same name. The name of the river originates with the Minnetaree tribe's 'Mi tse-a-da-zi' meaning 'yellow rock river. The tribe refers to the yellowish sandstone bluffs along part of the river. The park contains over 40 major waterfalls (350 total). The tallest waterfall, Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, reaches 308 feet. There are 300 active geysers in the park. Including 'Old Faithful' which erupts every 91 minutes. The largest hot springs in North America is the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone. It pumps out over 4,000 gallons of boiling water every minute. The largest high-altitude body of water in North America is the Yellowstone Lake. It is 286 sq miles and its deepest point measures 430 ft. Yellowstone National Park is located in three states: Wyoming (96% of the park), Montana (3%), and Idaho (1%). Yellowstone is an active super volcano (one of thirty worldwide). It contains one of the largest calderas, measuring 30 miles by 45 miles. The park is composed of 80% forest, 15% grassland, and 5% water. Yellowstone National Park is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Each year more than three million people visit Yellowstone National Park. The most remote occupied dwelling in the lower 48 states is the Thorofare Ranger Station in the southeast corner of the park. It is more than 32 miles from any other road or dwelling. The park rangers travel by horse to reach the station.
