Nineteenth century horticulturist Luther Burbank, whose career produced hundreds of new varieties of plants, had his home and greenhouses Santa Rosa. The grounds are preserved today as a registered National Historical Landmark. Sonoma County has a 400-acre wildlife preserve featuring featuring over 700 animals. This private preserve, Safari West, was established in 1989, is a member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, and the only place in Northern California where one can go on an African Safari. The largest town plaza in California is Sonoma Plaza. It was laid out by General Mariano Vallejo in 1835 and covers 8 acres. Petaluma became known as the "World's Egg Basket" following a major boom in chicken farms in the late 1800s. The first chicken incubator was invented in Petaluma in 1879. Even now the city celebrates Butter and Egg Days. Petaluma was the backdrop for the film "American Graffiti" for which there is an annual classic car show. The first mixed-use, solar powered, zero-waste community in the country is the Sonoma Mountain Village in Rohnert Park. The 200-acre solar-powered community is in the early stages of development although an events center, cafe and bar are already open to the public. Author Jack London and his wife called Sonoma Valley home in the early 20th century. The two are buried on their property (now a State Historic Park- open to the public). There are more wine growers in Sonoma county than there are in Napa county (1,800+). Inspired by music centers such as Tanglewood, The Donald and Maureen Green Music Center in Rohnert Park is a world-class performing arts complex. The Center opened in 2012 with concerts by classical music stars and popular artists. The Green Music Center continues to be a destination for incredible music. In 1846 Sonoma was capital of the Independent Republic of California for 25 days. Alfred Hitchcock filmed Shadow of a Doubt and The Birds in Sonoma County. The buildings featured in the films can still be seen in Santa Rosa, Bodega, and Bodega Bay. Sonoma County is roughly the size of the state of Rhode Island.
