  • Fun Facts: Rio is nicknamed Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City). Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1565 by EstÃÂcio de Sàof Portugal. The city recently celebrated its 450th anniversary. The city is named "River of January" because, as the legend describes, the Portuguese explorers came across the amazing bay thought it was the mouth of a great river. In 1808 the Portuguese royal family moved to the city and transformed it with the creation of a national museum, library, botanical gardens, and a medical school. In 1815 the Prince Regent made Rio the official capital of the Portuguese empire, a role that the city maintained until Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822. The large "Christ the Redeemer" statue overlooking the city is directly hit by lightning 2-4 times a year. In 2014 lightning broke off a piece of the right thumb and part of the head. The city continues to make regular restorations. Rio de Janeiro legalized street art in 2014. Street artists are allowed to decorate non-historic buildings. There is even a Graffiti Day celebrated on March 27th. The city is home to a Carmen Miranda Museum. Hundreds of items are on display at this museum dedicated to the silver screen singer, dancer, and actress who delighted audiences in Brazil and America. The city hosts the biggest carnival in the world, attended by more than two million people each day of the event. In 2016 Rio de Janeiro hosted the Summer Olympic Games; Brazil is the first South American country to have won the right to host the event. Copacabana is one of the most densely populated places in the world. The city of Rio de Janeiro has one of the highest populations per kilometer in the world. It is estimated that in Copacabana there are 25,000 residents per sq. kilometer.
