  • Fun Facts: The Jersey Shore refers to 130 miles of coastline stretching from Sandy Hook to Cape May. Atlantic City's streets were the inspiration for the game board Monopoly. Ocean Grove and Cape May both have some of the largest assemblages of authentic Victorian architecture in the country. Ocean Grove was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Sea Isle City was founded by Charles K. Landis who was so fascinated by a trip to Venice, Italy that he tried to recreate the canals here in this NJ city in the late 1800s. The world's first saltwater taffy was produced here in the 1870s. Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall Auditorium Organ is the most powerful, largest organ in the world. It features 33,112 pipes, the largest of which is 64' long. During the 1930s and 40s the Boardwalk Organ used to nearly deafen crowds of 41,000 people. Ocean City, a small island along the Jersey Shore, is a completely liquor free community (due to its religious history as a Christian resort). Asbury Park, a vacation spot for the well-to-do in the 19th century, has the second oldest electric trolley system in the country (installed in 1885). Barnegat comes from the word "Varendegat" meaning 'Inlet of the Breakers.' The inlet was given this name in 1614 by Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey who happened upon Long Beach Island, NJ. Lucy the Elephant, in Margate, NJ, is the largest elephant statue in the world. The first passenger airplane flight landed in Atlantic City, NJ on May 3, 1919.
