  • Fun Facts: Founded in 1850 Napa is one of the oldest cities in California. Vineyard land in Napa Valley is among the most expensive agricultural land in the country (valued between $75K and $300K per acre). There are nearly 4 milion winery tours every year in Napa. Despite the large scale of wineries in Napa Valley, the wineries in this area only produce 4% of California's total wine output. Napa Valley became the home of the first Agricultural Preserve in the country in 1968 and has the most comprehensive and stringent land use and environmental regulations of any region of winegrowing. Napa Valley started to become a popular tourist destination around the turn of the 20th century in part because of R.L. Stevenson's book The Silverado Squatters. Robert Louis Stevenson's famous wine quote "Wine is bottled poetry," is featured on the Napa Valley welcome sign. Entrepreneur Samuel Brannan recognized the region's mineral hot springs as a selling point and founded Calistoga, a resort town. In 1976 a blind tasting of international wines in France, Napa's Chateau Montelena wine took top honors. It was the first time that a California wine had bested a French wine. This sensation put Napa on the map so to speak. Napa Valley hosts a Mustard Festival each year between January and March. The festival celebrates the agricultural bounty of the region. Napa is home to a beautiful, historically preserved train. The railway through Napa, originally established in 1864 to provide transportation for visitors to Calistoga, was sold to Southern Pacific in 1885 which operated passenger service on the tracks until the 1930s. In 1989 Southern Pacific sold the railroad to a group of railroad and wine enthusiasts called the Napa Valley Wine Train Inc. This group sought to preserve the historic railroad and passenger train service. 'The Wine train" was created and has been steadily running through the valley ever since.
