  • Fun Facts: The Great Lakes make up one-fifth of the freshwater surface on the planet (6 quadrillion gallons). The lakes are on the U.S.-Canadian border. The Great Lakes Basin is home to about 34 million people. Lake Huron's Manitoulin Island is the largest island in any inland body of water on the planet (1,068 sq. miles). Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are connected by the Niagara River, including the Niagara Falls. The names of four of the Great Lakes are derived from Wyandot (Huron), Iroquoi, and Ojibwa tribes. The Fifth Lake, Lake Superior, gets its name from the French lac Sup_rieur, which means Upper Lake. Lake Michigan has an unusual water flow, it flows into a circular movement (like a car in a cul-de-sac). Seiche is the name for "free standing-wave oscillations" that move across lakes. These are created by wind or air pressure. A major storm on Lake Erie can cause short-term lake level changes of as much as 13 feet. Were one to build a barrier surrounding the 48 continental states in the U.S.A. and pour the water from the Great Lakes into it, a swimming pool, over 9' deep, would be created. The State of Michigan touchs four of the five lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, and Superior). The Chicago to Mackinac race is the oldest freshwater sailing race in the world (held every July).
